History of An Sibin

Our Venue

Irish pub culture is about tradition, community and storytelling, and at An Sibin, there is plenty of all of that.

Located in the heart of Northbridge, An Sibin is a proper Irish pub experience where the “craic” is always great, the welcome is always warm, and the live music is on seven days a week.

An Sibin (pronounced She-been) originates from the Irish Gaelic ‘sibin’, which refers to an illicit, unlicensed bar or speakeasy that sold homemade or bootleg alcohol.

These were set up during the British penal laws in Ireland, where Catholics were forbidden from owning certain properties.

These bars were under-the-radar hidden gems where the Irish locals were able to socialise, listen to traditional music and in some cases were a venue for rebellious gatherings.

Today, the term ‘sibin’ is frequently used as the name for cosy, traditional Irish pubs which aim to recreate the intimate, community-focused vibe of the historical speakeasy.

Our Story So Far

An Sibin was first opened in 2014 and quickly became a popular meeting place for live music and fans of Gaelic football and hurling.

Since first opening, our venue has become a welcoming home for Perth’s Irish community, both locals and visitors, drawn in by the warm atmosphere and late-night music each evening.

What To Expect at An Sibin

Well, a warm welcome for starters.

We welcome everyone to come and experience a true Irish pub. As the great Irish writer W.B. Yeats is said to have commented: “There are no strangers here; only friends you haven’t yet met.” Our regular locals know it’s about familiarity and our cosy atmosphere. And for first-time visitors, you won’t be a stranger for long.

Traditional Irish music is the heartbeat of our venue. We host lively traditional music in the evenings.

Weekdays and daytimes draw a crowd of regulars and passers-by, with the evenings drawing in bigger crowds.

Weekends are big nights with musicians taking the stage and belting out the tunes with traditional and more modern Irish tunes. Live music on weekdays goes from 8.30om-11.30pm. On weekends musicians take the stage from 9pm-1am.

Music is a quintessential part of a great Irish pub experience, a central part of Ireland’s social fabric.

At An Sibin we embrace that.

Come in for a pint, great chats with friends – and the staff – and enjoy plenty of good vibes.

If you’d like to enjoy the outdoors, we have a beer garden with four trestle tables located just out the front of the venue.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through, come in for a perfectly poured Guinness and enjoy a traditional Irish welcome.

Irish writer John Pentland Mahaffy once noted: “In Ireland, the inevitable never happens and the unexpected constantly occurs.”

That could describe any night at An Sibin.

Irish – and other – sport

There’s something about watching sport with friends, new and old, while nursing a Guinness. At An Sibin this is a daily pleasure.

Grab a glass and settle in. An Sibin is the perfect spot to watch a range of sports, including AFL, NRL, Gaelic Football and more, including hurling.

Hurling is the definition of a quintessential Irish sport. With origins dating back over 3,000 years, it is deeply woven into Ireland’s cultural identity.

If hurling is new to you, there are plenty of people at An Sibin who will be happy to explain the sport to you.
